Herschel Merritt

Herschel Merritt was born on September 6, 1948, in Carnesville, Georgia, to the late Howard and Lucille Merritt. He departed this life on October 30, 2025.

Herschel joined Broad River Baptist Church at an early age and later served faithfully as a deacon until his health declined.

He retired from Vermont American and was known as the straight shooter of the family- for if anyone was going to tell it like it was, it was certainly Herschel.

He was preceded in death by his twin sons, Christopher and Alvin Maxwell; and four siblings, Martha Merritt, "Big Gene" Merritt, Mamie McElveen, and Daniel Merritt, Sr.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 56 years, Ruth A. Merritt, of the home; four sons, James (Jana) Merritt of the home, Ken (Danyell) Merritt of Toccoa, Georgia, and Keith (Tonnie) Merritt of Martin, Georgia; one daughter, Taylor Maxwell of Toccoa, Georgia; three sisters, Brenda Carter of Martin, Georgia, Rebecca Merritt of Gwinnett, Georgia, and Sandra Pittman of Carnesville, Georgia; four brothers, Raymond (Ada) Merritt and Dennis (Mindy) Merritt, both of Martin, Georgia, Eddie Roy (Myra) Merritt of Hartwell, Georgia, and Anthony Merritt of Arizona; twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever love and miss him.
