We gather here today to celebrate the extraordinary life of Sue Helen Galloway Hickman, our beloved sister in Christ. Today as we mourn her passing, we also reflect on the many ways she touched our lives.
Sue was born December 13, 1941 in Seneca, South Carolina, to Sarah Eulala Galloway and J. W. Williams. She was an alumnus of Riverside High School in South Carolina, graduating in 1959. She later attended Tri-County Technical School and after completing her studies she moved to Anderson, South Carolina. In 1970 she moved to Toccoa, Georgia, where she was employed at Wright Manufacturing. She aiso worked as an insurance agent for Security Life for many years.
In 1973 God's hand intervened and she met and married the love of her life, Troy Hickman on April 23, 1973. Their marriage flourished with the blessings of God and a son, Matthew, was added to their happy union. In 1977 they moved back to Toccoa from Gainesville, Georgia. She joined membership of The Voice of Hope Seventh Day Adventist Church, and faithfully served as the church secretary, superintendent of Sabbath, and treasurer. In 1980, she was proprietor of The Brookside Assisted Living Facility for adults here in Toccoa. Sue had a heart filled with compassion. Her gentle and caring spirit seemed to surround everyone she met, and made them feel loved and appreciated. This was evident in her role as a caregiver. In 2004 she retired and the family moved to Orlando, Florida. The family became members of Patmos Chapel Seventh Day Adventist Church, where she served as a deaconess and disability leader. Several years later they changed membership to the University Seventh Day Adventist Church. She attended regularly until her decline in health.
She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Mary Jackson and brother, Frank Jackson.
Surviving family include her loving husband, Troy; son Matthew (Krystalyn); grandchildren, Naveah, Nehavia, Kian and Kwanye; step-son, Everette Johnson (Pamela); grandchildren, Estavious Smith, India and Jariyah Johnson; sister, Carolyn Grant; sisters-in-law, Helen Davis James), Bessie Clark, Patsy Turner (Howard), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Sue lived a vibrant life filled with love, kindness and compassion. She was a devoted wife, nurturing mother / grandmother and a loyal friend. Throughout her life she lived to serve God, and sought to uplift souls in the name of Jesus. Her sweet demeanor touched many hearts and will be greatly missed. Her spirit will forever inspire all who knew her. May she rest in peace.
