Our History

In 1936, Mr. Bishop Moss and Mr. Lamar Drew went into business to form the Moss & Drew Funeral Home. They were located at 110 Diagonal Street, in a small 1,100-square-foot building. The partnership only lasted approximately one year – the two partners disagreed on finances and parted company. Mr. Drew opened Drew Funeral Home in 1941, while Mr. Moss continued to operate at the Diagonal Street location as B. Moss Funeral Home.

In 1941, Mr. Mac Stovall partnered with Mr. Moss, and from 1941 to 1960, Moss-Stovall Funeral Home enjoyed a brisk and prosperous business.

In 1960, James Neal, Sr. bought out Mac Stovall’s share of the business and became a full-time partner. He bought out Bishop Moss’s shares in 1968 but kept the Moss-Stovall Funeral Home name. His brother, David Neal, also worked full-time at the funeral home.

Mr. Neal changed the name to Moss-Stovall-Neal Funeral Home, Inc. in 1971. The building remained at the Diagonal Street location, but the Neal brothers began looking for land to erect another building.

James and David Neal purchased the property and a building on Alexander Street in 1982. After extensive remodeling, the business moved to 342 S. Alexander Street in 1983. The building was again expanded and remodeled in 1991.

In 1989, James Neal, Jr. and Herman Prather became licensed embalmers and funeral directors and became part of the MSN family. Margaret Baldez, James and David Neal’s sister, played an integral part in the efficient operation of the business until her passing in 2005. Queenelle Neal contributed to the administrative operations of the business until her passing. David Neal retired from the business in 2003, and James Neal, Sr. died in 2018.

With a rich history dating back to 1936, Moss-Stovall-Neal Funeral Home is the oldest continuously operating business in Toccoa, GA. We are proud to be the primary provider of funeral and cremation services that create a healing experience for families and their loved ones in our area. Our many years of experience caring for people from all walks of life have shaped our commitment to compassionate care, high integrity, and service excellence. Our main goal is to provide our client families with memorable remembrance experiences, celebrations of their loved ones' life, and the memorialization of the time they shared.

The owners, James Neal, Jr., Anthony Neal, Yvette Neal Green, along with Herman Prather, all work to continue the tradition and legacy established by Bishop Moss, Mac Stovall, and James Neal, Sr. With the addition of Michaela Hudson, a licensed embalmer and funeral director, and Ji’Kaeus Harbin, an integral part of the day-to-day operations, the business continues to excel in the ever-changing world of funeral service.

In closing, our theme says it all: “Service by Neal . . . Already a Tradition”.
